I’ve got a quicksalesperson recruiting tip for you. I just got back from trail running. It’s something I like to do. Good way to blow off some steam and have a bit of fun.

I just finished up with some work, got a little project block together, and then went for a run. When I was on my way back there I met a mom with a couple of cute little girls. They were walking down the trail and they said, “Hi,” to me. As I made my way back to the truck, about a quarter mile from where I saw them, I noticed a trail of popcorn. There were sprinkles of popcorn all the way back.

What in the world does that have to do with salesperson recruiting?

Well, everything in my world. I was thinking about that popcorn, and here’s the thought for the day.

In your salesperson recruiting system, how good is your trail of popcorn?

Does your trail of popcorn lead from where your salesperson candidate finds it back to:

Your website?

Your job landing page?

And ultimately back to your salesperson recruiting funnel –  the place where you then can do a good job of implementing practical questions, assessments, scoring sheets, and comparative analysis to try to find the right candidate?

You need a trail of popcorn.

This is what I would suggest that you do.

If somebody else, or even if you, are the one in charge of doing salesperson recruiting, go out on the internet and behave as though you were a salesperson. A strong salesperson. A stud or a studess. Go ahead and follow your salesperson recruiting process, and think about what it would be like if you were the candidate going down the trail of what is hopefully some sweet, sugary caramel popcorn, all the way to the job that is going to make you a happy salesperson; and that’s going to make you money as a company.

Put out a trail of popcorn.
